Spin-orbit scattering and pair breaking in a structurally disordered copper oxide layer.

چکیده
To leading order in displacement size, the scattering of electrons in a Cu-O plane from O displacements perpendicular to that plane is due to spin-orbit coupling. This scattering is investigated with the following results: (1) As a consequence of timereversal symmetry, spin fluctuations, which can strongly enhance scattering from a spin impurity, do not enhance spin-orbit scattering; and (2) for a superconductor with a dx2−y2 gap function, pair-breaking from spin-orbit scattering can be strong, particularly in a structurally disordered phase in which locally CuO6 octahedra tilt as in the orthorhombic phase of La2CuO4, but globally the average structure is tetragonal. These results are discussed in the context of the (La,Nd)-(Sr,Ba)-Cu-O system where certain structural transitions are observed to suppress superconductivity.

Andreev reflection measurements of spin polarization
We discuss aspects of Andreev reflection AR measurements in normal metal-superconductor N-S and ferromagnet-superconductor F-S devices. We describe the analytical model used to quantify spin polarization from the conductance measurements and discuss the validity of this simple model using parabolic bands as simple surrogates for real band structures. We present AR measurements of spin polarizat...
متن کاملEnhancement of superconductivity by decreased magnetic spin-flip scattering: Nonmonotonic TC dependence with enhanced magnetic ordering
Fe/Cu superlattices exhibit a structural and magnetic transition with increasing Fe layer thickness, thus increasing the Curie temperature. An enhancement in the superconducting transition temperature is found in proximity coupled Nb/@Fe/Cu# layers as the Fe thickness increases. These results indicate a weakening of the magnetic proximity effect for the material with higher Curie temperature, a...
متن کاملControllable Rashba spin-orbit interaction in artificially engineered superlattices involving the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5.
By using a molecular beam epitaxy technique, we fabricate a new type of superconducting superlattices with controlled atomic layer thicknesses of alternating blocks between the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5, which exhibits a strong Pauli pair-breaking effect, and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn5. The introduction of the thickness modulation of YbCoIn5 block layers breaks the inversion symmetry ...
متن کاملIntensity correlations in electronic-wave propagation in a disordered medium: The influence of spin-orbit scattering.
We obtain explicit expressions for the correlation functions of transmission and reflection coefficients of coherent electronic waves propagating through a disordered quasi-one-dimensional medium with purely elastic diffusive scattering in the presence of spin-orbit interactions. We find in the metallic regime both large local intensity fluctuations and long-range correlations which ultimately ...
متن کاملConduction electron spin-flip scattering by impurities in copper
We have measured the concentration dependence of the transmission conduction electron spin resonance linewidth of copper doped with Li, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Ni, and Ti. In each case, we find a linear concentration dependence which allows us to determine a spin-flip cross-section, 03C3sf, for each impurity. These crosssections, together with those deduced from linewidth data previously published for ...
